After being nearly wiped out by phylloxera an aphid that devastated vineyards in Europe in 1890, the family replanted and kept going. In the 1940s they bottled wine their first wine for own their use and to sell to local tavernas. In 1980s, Francesc Suriol Cantí, a chemistry graduate and oenologist took over and started bottling cavas. The Suriols decided to switch organics in 1990s, being officially certified in 1996. Assís Suriol introduced biodynamic practices 20 years later. Part of Suriol’s natural approach is their Azimut project, named after the Arabic word for direction.
